Meet the Team

We are incredibly proud of our dedicated Sports Club team – meet the team below.

Swim School and Sports Club Manager

Hi, I’m Val, Swim School & Sports Club Manager. I have worked in the leisure industry since qualifying as a Level 1 Swim Teacher at 16 years old. I managed a large swim school for almost 10 years. I am also a qualified PE teacher and have been teaching PE and assisting children with additional needs to learn.

I have taught swimming for over 25 years spanning all levels, ages and abilities. It has always been my passion and even at times when I have been working full time as a teacher I have always squeezed in some swim teaching as I love watching the progress that swimmers can make through good teaching.

Outside of swimming I am a scout leader which takes me to all sorts of interesting and exciting places. I play rounders and enjoying running and keeping fit. I love outdoor pursuits, from hiking, cycling, paddle-boarding to just enjoying the countryside.

Hi I’m Alex Cope, Assistant Swim School and Sports Club Manager

I’ve worked in the leisure industry for six years. I started off working with children at an outdoor learning centre, teaching all manner of activities from rock-climbing to rifle-shooting. Three years ago I made the change to active leisure, working with adults in swimming pools and gyms.

In this time I’ve learned to recognise for all ages the values of an active lifestyle; in experiencing new disciplines, and in training to achieve your goals. I love any and all sport from football and rugby to tennis and even snooker! My favourite activities are racquet sports, in particular badminton. In my spare time, I really enjoy cooking; I find that when you eat well, you live well!

Joining the Taunton School team in 2020 comes with a wide range of modern-world challenges, but I’m looking forward to being an important part of taking these on and helping to improve the experience for everyone who uses our facilities.

Hi I’m Dan, one of the Duty Managers here at Taunton School Sports Club.

I have worked here for 3 years, starting off as a lifeguard whilst finishing my studies, and recently being promoted to Duty Manager. Since then, I have been busy improving my skill set, to broaden my horizon in the leisure industry and strengthening my passion for sport and physical activities.

Whilst working for Taunton School Sports Club, I have learned about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and consistency in all training disciplines. I have found great satisfaction in developing my organisation skills and working within a team to successfully achieve our goals together.

Outside of work, I love spending time outdoors; skiing, surfing, and mountain biking. I also go to the gym regularly, and enjoy seeing the staff and members at the sports club as there is always a good conversation and laugh to be had.  At the beginning of this year, I spent 3 months in Canada, where I gained my level 2 ski instructor qualification and experience working with a wide variety of people, and felt this greatly improved my communication and customer service abilities. I look forward to meeting you here and helping you have the best time possible!

Hi, I’m Matthew, Taunton School Sports Clubs newest Duty Manager.

I’ve worked within the Leisure Industry for the last 3 years. Starting out as a leisure assistant I have since worked towards my Leisure Management Apprenticeship and more recently, been promoted to Duty Manager.

I love working in the Leisure Industry and getting to meet and interact with new people every day. Throughout my short career, I have gained lots of qualifications, from Spin Instructing to Swim Teacher all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed and look forward to bringing this to Taunton School Sports Club. I thrive off the challenging environment the Leisure Industry brings and feel like every day is a school day.

My favourite part about working with Taunton School Sports Club is seeing the great people we work with, both colleagues and members alike. It’s the family community feel that makes Taunton School Sports Club such a pleasant place. Of course, not forgetting seeing the smiling faces of the children during Swim School.

In my downtime, I enjoy exploring Exmoor by foot or bike. I also really enjoy cooking too; having homegrown vegetables in the back garden always helps, and they make a wicked vegetable soup for the winter! Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without my love of sport, especially Rugby and Cricket.
